Telefonica is accelerating its withdrawal from Spanish-speaking Latin America under its new CEO Marc Murtra to focus on its core markets of Brazil, Britain, Germany, and Spain. The company is actively selling assets, including its units in Mexico (advised by JP Morgan) and Chile (advised by Citi), and has already agreed to sell operations in Argentina, Peru, Colombia, Uruguay, and Ecuador. These strategic moves follow previous divestments in Central America and have resulted in a 1.7 billion euro capital loss in Q1 from the sales of the Peruvian and Argentinian units.

Telefonica (TEF.MC) is significantly reshaping its strategy under new CEO Marc Murtra, accelerating its withdrawal from Spanish-speaking Latin American markets where profitability has been below capital cost. This strategic pivot, following recent ownership and management changes, aims to concentrate resources on four core markets: Brazil, Britain, Germany, and Spain, with a new overarching company strategy expected in the second half of this year. The divestment process is extensive: Telefonica has engaged JP Morgan (JPM.N) to manage the sale of its Mexican business and Citi for its Chilean operations. Furthermore, agreements are in place for the sale of its Argentinian unit to Telecom Argentina (TECO2m.BA) for $1.245 billion, though this deal is currently suspended due to anti-trust concerns raised by Argentina's presidential office. The Peruvian unit, which had filed for bankruptcy protection, was sold to Integra Tec International for approximately 900,000 euros. These two disposals in Peru and Argentina contributed to a €1.7 billion capital loss for Telefonica in the first quarter. Other agreed sales include its Colombian unit to Millicom International (MICC.F) for $400 million, its Uruguayan unit to Millicom for $440 million, and its Ecuadorian unit, also to Millicom, for $380 million. These actions build upon earlier divestitures such as El Salvador ($144 million in 2021), Costa Rica ($538 million in 2020), and several Central American units sold to Millicom and America Movil in 2019. Notably, Telefonica has not announced sale plans for its Venezuelan unit, where the local head of Movistar indicated a $500 million investment plan. Telefonica Brasil (VIVT3.SA) remains a key component of its core business strategy, having recently made small acquisitions.
