CoreWeave Has $104 Billion of Contracted Revenue and a $59 Billion Market Value

CoreWeave reported a June 30 revenue backlog of ~$104B, up from $30.1B a year earlier, and Q2 revenue surged 112% Y/Y to $2.6B, but the net loss widened to $626M. The company raised 2026 capital spending to $35B–$39B, while net interest expense climbed to $640M in the quarter (up from $267M), and adjusted operating income fell to $128M on a 5% margin despite 59% adjusted EBITDA margin. Shares jumped ~19%, yet capacity build-out, depreciation drag, and financing costs mean profitability is not keeping pace with demand.

Analysis

CoreWeave should be read less as an AI growth equity and more as a highly levered project-finance vehicle with optionality on GPU scarcity. That makes the equity story fragile: every incremental backlog dollar is only valuable if power, permits, and financing arrive on time, and the market is likely underpricing the gap between contracted demand and cash conversion. In this setup, NVIDIA is the cleaner beneficiary because it captures the upfront hardware pull-through regardless of CoreWeave’s margin structure, while CRWV equity absorbs depreciation, refinancing, and execution slippage.

The next catalyst path is not demand, but capital formation. Over 1-3 months, watch for equity issuance, covenant language, or any indication that the 2026 capex plan will force more debt at widening spreads; that is where the stock can re-rate down even if bookings stay strong. Over 6-18 months, the key risk is that depreciation and interest expense continue to outrun operating income, turning backlog into a slower-moving asset than bulls assume.

Contrarian view: the market may be treating backlog as if it were software ARR, when it is closer to a gated delivery queue with material balance-sheet leakage. If data-center permitting tightens further or customer concentration shifts, backlog quality could weaken without showing up immediately in revenue. The thesis would be falsified if CoreWeave demonstrates sustained free-cash-flow conversion, cheaper non-dilutive funding, and a visible step-up in operating income faster than interest expense.
