Recent Selloff Could Provide Appealing Entry Point For Pan American Silver

Pan American Silver is rated a buy amid surging silver prices, strong Q1 earnings, and a sector-low forward P/E near 10. AISC fell sharply to $6.63/oz in Q1 2026 from $13.88/oz a year ago, highlighting major margin improvement. The MAG Silver acquisition and underground mine portfolio are supporting higher production and lower costs, reinforcing PAAS as a low-cost diversified precious metals producer.

Analysis

PAAS is in the rare spot where a higher metal price is being amplified by a structural cost reset rather than just operating leverage. That matters because the market typically underwrites silver producers on spot-price beta, but a sustained sub-10x forward multiple plus a much lower cost base can force a re-rating from “levered commodity call” to “cash-flow compounder,” especially if management can keep consolidating underground ounces into a higher-margin portfolio.

The second-order winner is not only PAAS shareholders but also the takeover and royalty ecosystem around mid-tier precious metals. A stronger balance sheet and visible unit-cost improvement increase the probability that PAAS becomes a consolidator, which should pressure weaker single-asset peers to either sell or accept lower relative multiples; that can widen the valuation gap between diversified, low-cost names and high-cost marginal producers over the next 3-12 months. MAG.TO also gains indirectly as M&A optionality and asset quality become more valuable in a rising-silver tape.

The main risk is that the market is extrapolating a favorable quarter into a durable margin regime. Silver is the obvious catalyst, but if prices stall or mean-revert while operating costs normalize, the earnings power can compress quickly because miners’ equity duration is short; the risk window is days-to-months for sentiment and months-to-quarters for fundamentals. Execution risk also rises after an acquisition: integration slippage, jurisdictional issues, and unexpected sustaining capex can erase a meaningful portion of the headline AISC benefit.

Consensus may still be underpricing how much of this is a quality shift versus a cyclical call. If the cost structure is genuinely reset, PAAS deserves a premium to the group rather than just a cheap multiple on peak earnings; if not, the stock is vulnerable to a sharp de-rating once investors look through one strong quarter. The asymmetric setup is to own PAAS into any silver weakness, because the market is likely to protect a visibly low-cost producer more than a marginal one if the commodity tape softens.
