European shares flat as AI caution prevails; focus on defence stocks

STOXX 600 was flat at 650.84 points, but European tech led declines, down 1.6% amid caution that a quarter-long chip rally left valuations stretched. Samsung Electronics shares slid despite forecasts for Q2 profit surging to a record high on AI demand, while Siemens Energy fell 5.5% after Barclays downgraded the AI equipment maker to underweight; ASML and Infineon were each down ~4%. In defense, Saab rose 5.3% on a Morgan Stanley upgrade ahead of a NATO summit, and Shell gained 2.2% after slightly raising its Q2 integrated gas outlook.

Analysis

The tape is saying AI is still a good business but a worse trade. When valuations are already stretched, the marginal driver stops being revenue and becomes rate-of-change in capex, and that is where European semicap beta like IFNNY tends to get hit hardest: the market is paying for a longer AI digestion cycle than the fundamentals may actually support. If the next two earnings prints do not show accelerating order visibility, the de-rating can be sharper than the fundamental slowdown because positioning is crowded.

The cleaner relative value is in assets with current free cash flow and tangible demand, not projected AI adjacency. SHEL looks more resilient because the gas/LNG bridge monetizes immediately, while power-grid and equipment names such as SMNEY remain hostage to whether AI-related electrification turns into sustained orders or just a headline trade. That makes any weakness in AI hardware a potential source of funds for energy exposure rather than a reason to chase the whole "infrastructure" basket.

Defense is a different animal: summit-driven moves are usually front-loaded, but the multi-year budget cycle is the real catalyst. If NATO language disappoints on concrete spending targets, the recent winners can give back quickly; if it overdelivers, upside likely persists for months as order books re-rate. The contrarian miss in consensus is that this is not one trade—AI multiples can compress at the same time defense and energy rerate, creating a cleaner factor rotation than the market currently prices.
