2 Optical Stocks to Buy After Tuesday's Selloff

AI optics peers sold off Tuesday despite strong results: Lumentum revenue jumped 109% YoY to $1.01B (non-GAAP gross margin 50.4%) while Coherent revenue rose 34% YoY to a record $2.05B with operating margin up to 12.4%. Management guided for continued growth (Lumentum $1.225B–$1.275B Q1 vs ~$480.7M YoY base; Coherent $2.2B–$2.4B revenue with adjusted EPS $1.85–$2.05). Shares fell 9.9% (to $873.31) and 12.8% (to $306.43) as investors feared data-center AI demand may not last, not due to rate moves.

Analysis

The cleanest read-through is not “AI demand is gone,” but that optics suppliers are now being traded as the highest-beta expression of hyperscaler capex. That makes them vulnerable to de-rating on sentiment even when orders are still ahead of supply; in the near term, the market will punish any hint of normalization in lead times faster than it rewards reported growth. Downstream winners are the large AI infrastructure buyers if component pricing eventually loosens, while contract manufacturers and adjacent networking names likely see the first inventory air pocket if spend pauses.

The key risk is timing: the next 1-3 months are about whether hyperscaler capex commentary and networking budgets confirm another leg up, or start to flatten. If the former, this selloff becomes a positioning event and these stocks can rebound sharply because margins are still expanding and earnings revisions remain positive; if the latter, the multiple compression can persist for quarters even with still-solid revenue. Over 6-18 months, capacity catch-up is the bigger threat: once supply expands, the scarcity premium fades and revenue growth will matter more than the AI narrative.

Contrarian angle: the market may be over-discounting a demand rollover while underestimating how much operating leverage remains if utilization stays tight. That said, the valuation gap means breadth may matter more than speed, so the cleaner setup is relative value rather than an outright bet on beta. What would falsify the bullish read is a sequential revenue guide cut, gross margin flattening, or any hyperscaler capex update that implies a pause rather than a timing shift.
