Tom Lee's favorite buy ideas heading into the fall

Fundstrat’s Tom Lee remains bullish into 4Q, targeting the S&P 500 to accelerate higher with a prior call of 7,900–8,000 by end-August and noting it already reached prior 2026 levels. In its 2026 stock lists, it highlights JPMorgan (+~10% YTD) with a bullish $390 Wells Fargo price target (~9% upside) and AI/infra plays like Lumentum (+130% YTD) and Arista (+~42% in 2026). It also warns against crypto-linked names including Robinhood (down ~16% YTD), Galaxy Digital (up ~2% YTD) and Riot Platforms (up ~61% YTD), as global bond yields have recently risen to multi-year highs.

Analysis

This reads more like a factor signal than a fresh fundamental edge: the “winners” are the names with the cleanest exposure to accelerating AI capex and momentum-driven inflows, while the “avoids” are the most crowded retail/crypto beta expressions. The highest-quality beneficiary is JPM, but the real second-order winner is LITE: optical bottlenecks tend to reprice faster than the headline AI platforms because orders hit sooner and pricing power can expand before the market fully believes the capex run-rate. NVDA remains the ecosystem anchor, but at this stage it is more a confirmation trade than a new alpha source.

On the downside, HOOD, GLXY, and RIOT are less about crypto prices alone and more about trading intensity, option activity, and retail engagement. If digital assets stay weak or range-bound, revenue elasticity works against them and margin leverage can flip negative quickly; that is a 1-3 month problem, not a multi-year thesis. The risk to the bearish call is reflexivity: a sharp BTC rebound or renewed meme/option volume can squeeze these names even without any fundamental improvement.

The contrarian point is that the market may be underestimating rate sensitivity inside the “AI winners” basket. With yields already elevated, long-duration multiple expansion can get capped even if earnings estimates rise, so the setup favors relative value over outright beta. The best falsifier for the bullish basket is a downgrade in hyperscaler 2026 capex commentary or any sign that photonics demand is being met by inventory rather than new bookings; the best falsifier for the crypto shorts is a durable BTC reclaim above its recent trend with rising spot/ETF flows.
