Wall Street futures rise ahead of inflation report as the Fed watches surging costs

U.S. stock index futures were modestly higher ahead of July inflation data (S&P 500 +0.3%, Nasdaq +0.7%), with economists expecting CPI to ease to 3.4% from 3.5%, which could affect Fed rate pressure. However, Iran-related shipping risks pushed energy higher (Brent $89.08, +0.19%; U.S. crude $83.53, +0.4%) and lifted Treasury yields, driving long-term mortgage rates to the highest level in a year. Individual winners also jumped premarket on earnings, including CoreWeave (+18%) and Super Micro Computer (+9%), supporting AI data-center infrastructure names.

Analysis

The near-term market setup is dominated by duration, not just the CPI print itself. A tame inflation number can spark a reflex bid in AI infrastructure, but if oil keeps the long end sticky, the multiple expansion in the highest-beta names will fade quickly; in other words, the first reaction may be right, the 1-3 month follow-through may not be. That makes the more durable winners the suppliers with actual content leverage and better pricing power, not the most levered balance sheets.

Within AI hardware, the better relative-risk names are the optical/interconnect and networking layers. COHR, LITE, and to a lesser extent MRVL should capture the second-order spend shift as data-center buildouts move from announcements to deployment, where component intensity rises and vendor mix matters more than headline server growth. SMCI and CRWV are more exposed to financing conditions and working-capital optics; if yields remain elevated, their operating momentum can be offset by a higher cost of capital and a tougher market multiple.

The contrarian miss is that a single cooler inflation print may not matter if geopolitics keeps energy embedded in the inflation path for months. That would cap long-end yield relief, keeping pressure on duration-heavy growth even as the headline tape looks risk-on. Falsifiers: a sustained move lower in the 10Y yield after CPI, or a second clean earnings beat/raise from the AI supply chain that confirms demand is broadening beyond a few hyperscale customers.
