Germany orders AeroVironment Puma drones for $30.9 million

AeroVironment won a $30.9M German Bundeswehr order for Puma unmanned aircraft systems under the NATO NSPA LARUS airborne reconnaissance program, with delivery required by late 2026. The award bundles Puma AE/LE variants plus payloads and ground control capabilities, representing the first time a customer buys the complete Puma portfolio in a single program. While the stock is down 44% over six months despite 141% trailing-12-month revenue growth, analyst coverage remains supportive (Wedbush Outperform; $250 PT), implying positive fundamentals even as near-term sentiment has been pressured.

Analysis

AVAV is getting a quality-of-backlog signal, not a near-term P&L step-up. The real read-through is that a NATO-installed base can translate into higher-margin retrofit, training, and spares revenue over 12-24 months, which matters more than the headline contract size. That favors AVAV versus smaller, more speculative drone names, but the move is not big enough to justify rerating the stock on bookings alone.

The market should be focused on conversion, not award flow: if management can show gross margin expansion and faster cash conversion as these allied programs roll in, the multiple can hold despite valuation concerns. If revenue slips to late-2026 delivery with no follow-on orders, the market will treat this as backlog theater and the stock can give back any pop quickly. In the defense value chain, EO/IR payload, comms, battery, and ground-station suppliers get an indirect lift; prime contractors likely benefit less because this is a point-solution procurement, not a platform reset.

The NVDA angle is longer-dated and more important than the headline move implies. Custom silicon efforts by model labs are a margin and pricing-power problem first, a unit-demand problem second; the near-term training cycle still supports NVDA, but inference economics could erode GPU attach over 6-18 months. Consensus may be overreacting to the headline today, yet underestimating the strategic push toward ASICs if that trend becomes real.
