SpaceX Q2: Going Beyond The Obvious Valuation-Driven Bear Case

SpaceX remains a “Strong Buy” despite a 27% drawdown since the last coverage. In Q2, revenue grew 92% YoY and management delivered a double-beat, while the operating loss narrowed from -$1.52B to -$1.26B. The AI segment is expected to overtake Connectivity in revenue in 4–5 quarters as rapid CapEx converts into recognized revenues and cash flows.

Analysis

The bigger takeaway is not the quarter itself but the implication that the business mix is becoming less linear and more platform-like. If AI is genuinely absorbing a larger share of incremental economics, that should support a richer private-market multiple than a pure connectivity story because the valuation ceiling shifts from consumer broadband churn to higher-retention enterprise/compute contracts. The second-order loser set is the legacy satellite and broadband incumbents whose bull case depends on the leader staying bandwidth-constrained and narrowly focused.

That said, this is exactly the kind of narrative that needs independent cash-flow verification. The main risk is timing mismatch: revenue recognition can outrun durable free-cash-flow conversion for several quarters, especially if the reported improvement is driven by a few large contracts or accounting cadence rather than a repeatable demand curve. Over 1-3 months, the catalyst is any secondary pricing or financing that validates the rerating; over 6-18 months, the test is margin durability and customer concentration, not headline growth.

Contrarian view: the market may be underestimating how much upside is already embedded in private marks after a sharp drawdown, while simultaneously overestimating how quickly a mix shift can re-rate the asset. If the AI story is real, the recovery path should be volatile and gradual; if it is mostly a narrative overlay, the current enthusiasm should fade once external checks fail to confirm sustained capex conversion.
