Most people who quit M365 for Google do it out of spite, but there’s no ROI in that
Source: The Register
Gartner analyst Domenico Scriva said a switch from Microsoft 365 E5 to Google Workspace is unlikely to lower total costs: after adding telephony, security, business intelligence and OS capabilities, Google’s offering could cost about $2 more per user per month, despite bundled Gemini AI versus Microsoft's separately priced Copilot. Migration complexity, ecosystem dependencies and user training can further raise costs, with a full transition estimated to require at least two years. Scriva expects AI-driven interfaces to eventually disrupt productivity software by reducing reliance on individual applications, but sees limited near-term economic rationale for simply swapping suites.
Analysis
The key investable implication is Microsoft’s enterprise-suite moat is driven less by nominal seat pricing than by switching friction and bundled control-plane economics. That supports renewal pricing, low churn, and resilient commercial remaining-performance obligations even if Google undercuts on collaboration software. MSFT’s incremental Copilot monetization is therefore not necessarily undermined by bundled Gemini: enterprise buyers optimize for security, identity, endpoint management, compliance, and workflow continuity rather than the standalone AI feature price.
For GOOG, aggressive Workspace-plus-Gemini packaging may improve AI distribution and usage telemetry but is unlikely to produce a near-term enterprise share inflection if customers must reconstruct surrounding infrastructure. The more relevant 6-18 month risk to both vendors is that agentic workflow layers commoditize document and presentation applications, shifting value toward the model, identity/data permissions, and integration layer. MSFT is better positioned in installed enterprise identity and business-process data; GOOG has an advantage where cloud-native development and AI-model preference drive the buying decision.
There is no material day-to-day trading catalyst here. The 1-3 month watchpoint is enterprise commentary on Copilot attach rates, paid-seat retention, and whether discounting rises at large renewals; the structural thesis is falsified if Workspace gains occur alongside measurable displacement of Microsoft security, telephony, or endpoint-management spend rather than only collaboration-seat substitutions. AAPL is a peripheral beneficiary only if Mac-led enterprise standardization broadens, but hardware refresh economics are too indirect to justify a standalone position.

Key Decisions for Investors
- Maintain or initiate a 6-12 month long MSFT / short GOOG pair, sized beta-neutral: Microsoft’s suite economics should remain more defensible at renewal than Google’s bundled-AI pricing. Target 10-15% relative upside; exit if Microsoft reports two consecutive quarters of weakening commercial-seat growth or material Copilot price concessions.
- Do not chase GOOG on Workspace/Gemini distribution alone. Upgrade to a long only if management discloses sustained Workspace enterprise-seat acceleration and evidence that Gemini is increasing net revenue per user rather than functioning primarily as a retention discount.
- Ahead of the next MSFT earnings cycle, monitor commercial RPO growth, Microsoft 365 E5 mix, Copilot paid-seat disclosures, and security-suite growth. A decline in E5 mix or explicit large-account migration losses would invalidate the renewal-moat thesis more quickly than headline AI adoption metrics.
- Use AAPL only as a watch item: consider a 12-month long versus HPQ or DELL only if enterprise Mac penetration is corroborated by channel data and management commentary. Without evidence of incremental corporate unit share, the productivity-suite dynamic is insufficient to offset Apple’s broader valuation and China-demand risks.
