UBS upgrades Cummins stock rating on power business growth outlook

UBS upgraded Cummins to Buy from Neutral and lifted its price target to $850 from $565, citing double-digit growth in the Power business, a stronger truck cycle, and new engine content as drivers of earnings upside. UBS now sees EPS rising from about $30 in 2026 to $41.25 by 2028, versus consensus at $39.10, and its 2028 Power Systems and Distribution EBITDA forecast is 6% above consensus. The stock has already rallied 103% over the past year and recent earnings and raised 2030 targets reinforce a constructive fundamental backdrop.

Analysis

CMI is being re-rated on a classic second-order setup: not just better earnings, but a higher-quality mix shift. The real upside comes if Power continues compounding while truck demand merely stops deteriorating; that combination tends to expand multiple even when end-market growth is only mid-single digits. The market still appears to be discounting the durability of content per engine and aftermarket pull-through, which is where estimate revisions can lag fundamentals by several quarters.

The key competitive angle is that Cummins is increasingly behaving like a power infrastructure proxy rather than a cyclical diesel OEM. If data center and distributed power demand stay tight, the company can sustain a premium on backlog visibility and pricing power, while legacy truck exposure becomes a smaller valuation anchor. That creates a relative-value opportunity versus industrial peers with less direct exposure to electrified or distributed generation capex.

The main risk is that consensus is probably right on the direction of the truck cycle but wrong on the slope. If Class 8 volumes inflect slower than expected, the stock can still de-rate despite better Power execution because the market will question how much of the upside is already embedded after the run. Over the next 1-3 months, the stock is likely to trade on margin evidence and order commentary; over 12-24 months, the upside case depends on whether Power can keep compounding into 2028 without a sharp compression in mix or pricing.

Contrarian view: the move may be less about underappreciated earnings power and more about investors searching for quality industrial exposure with AI/data-center adjacency. If that’s the driver, the valuation can overshoot fundamental revisions in the near term, but it also means any disappointment in Power orders or engine content is a fast reset catalyst. In that sense, the stock is better owned on pullbacks than chased after gap moves, unless management confirms another leg of 2026-2027 estimate upside.
