ONCOR REPORTS THIRD QUARTER 2026 RESULTS

Oncor reported Q3 2026 net income of $572 million, up $192 million from $380 million a year earlier; nine-month net income rose to $1.212 billion from $820 million. Higher rates, regulated revenues, warmer-weather consumption and customer growth drove the increases. Oncor deployed approximately $6.3 billion in capital through September and remains on plan for a record $9.0 billion 2026 investment; it projects its 2027–2031 base capital plan to increase approximately 20%.

Analysis

The favorable read-through is structural, not a clean earnings surprise for Sempra (SRE). Oncor’s regulated investment can enlarge its rate base, but reported revenue growth should not be extrapolated at the same rate: weather, surcharge timing and UTM/SRP recoveries contribute, and recovery revenues bring associated depreciation and carrying costs rather than automatically creating equivalent incremental margin. Rising interest expense and heavy external financing also make allowed returns, regulatory lag and capital-market access central to equity value.

The largest upside optionality is Texas load growth; the largest analytical trap is treating interconnection requests as committed demand. The 293 GW data-center queue is not a build forecast. Batch Zero classifications remain conditional, with final transmission planning delayed, while customer collateral reduces—but does not eliminate—ratepayer exposure to cancellations. Near term, the December ERCOT audit and Oncor’s Q1 2027 capital-plan update matter more than headline queue size. Over 6–18 months, project approvals, load energization and cost recovery determine whether capex compounds earnings or mostly increases financing needs.

Contrarian view: a record capital plan is not inherently equity-accretive if affordability pressure, landowner opposition, appeals or supply constraints slow projects, or regulators resist timely recovery. SRE’s indirect Oncor exposure also dilutes the direct signal from Oncor’s results. Treat the release as a modest positive for long-run infrastructure visibility, not a basis for a large immediate SRE rerating.

Key Decisions for Investors

  • No event-driven SRE position from this release alone. Consider adding only on weakness if subsequent SRE guidance confirms Oncor investment is earning through to consolidated cash flow without a material deterioration in financing costs.
  • Track the December 2026 ERCOT audit and Q1 2027 capital-plan disclosure. Upgrade the thesis only if conditional large-load classifications convert into funded, scheduled projects and Oncor’s plan identifies credible regulatory recovery; downgrade if classifications are cut or projects slip.
  • Monitor SRE and Oncor financing disclosures for debt-cost, liquidity and capital-contribution trends. The thesis is weakened if incremental interest and funding needs outpace approved rate-base growth or recovery timing.
  • Falsification watch: adverse rehearing or appeal outcomes on major transmission approvals, material reductions in the 2027–2031 plan, or evidence that data-center requests are being cancelled without adequate cost recovery would undermine the growth case.
