IBM RELEASES THIRD-QUARTER RESULTS
Source: PR Newswire
IBM reported third-quarter 2026 revenue of $17.1 billion, up 5% year over year (6% at constant currency), with software revenue up 8% and GAAP diluted EPS of $2.30 versus $1.84 a year earlier. It kept its full-year constant-currency revenue growth outlook at 4%–5% and raised its free-cash-flow expectation to an increase of more than $1 billion year over year. Third-quarter free cash flow rose $0.7 billion to $3.0 billion, and IBM returned $1.6 billion through dividends.
Analysis
The useful signal is mix, not headline growth: Software is carrying the thesis, with Data and Hybrid Cloud gains alongside improving segment profit, while Automation is contracting and Consulting’s near-flat revenue comes with weaker segment profitability. If software growth broadens, recurring revenue could support better earnings quality and a higher multiple; if it remains concentrated in a few product lines, the market may treat it as a narrow pocket rather than a durable re-rating. Infrastructure’s strength is also uneven: Distributed Infrastructure growth offsets a steep IBM Z decline, so do not extrapolate the segment result without separating product-cycle effects.
Cash guidance is supportive but execution-sensitive. Nine-month free cash flow is only modestly ahead year over year, so achieving the newly raised full-year increase requires a stronger Q4 comparison. Meanwhile, acquisitions have consumed substantial cash and debt is higher; conversion of acquired assets into organic growth matters more than the adjusted-margin narrative. GAAP EPS growth also benefits from a much lower effective tax rate, so operating profit and cash conversion are cleaner indicators of momentum.
Near term, the earnings call is the catalyst for software durability, Q4 cash-flow phasing, and acquisition integration. Over 6–18 months, the bull case depends on software expansion outweighing consulting stagnation and the Z cycle. A weaker software outlook, another margin decline, or missed FCF target would undermine the positive read. Without valuation and post-release price action, the results alone do not justify chasing a large move.

Key Decisions for Investors
- Treat IBM as a measured positive, not a broad-based acceleration story. Consider adding only on post-call weakness if management supports continued Software momentum and the shares hold their post-earnings range; no price target is warranted from the supplied data.
- Use the conference call to test the full-year FCF raise: request quarterly phasing and distinguish operating cash generation from financing-receivable movements. If Q4 cash conversion looks acquisition- or working-capital-dependent, reduce confidence in the dividend-support thesis.
- Track Software growth and segment profit alongside Automation; a deceleration in Data or Hybrid Cloud, or continued Automation contraction, would falsify the mix-improvement case. Avoid extrapolating the Distributed Infrastructure rebound without evidence it persists beyond a product cycle.
- Do not read GAAP EPS growth as equivalent to operating acceleration: the year-over-year tax-rate shift is material. Reassess the earnings-quality view if operating margin weakens or acquisition-related adjustments remain large without evidence of acquired-business contribution.
