Bajaj Electricals Q2 FY’27 slides: margins expand amid modest growth
Source: Investing.com

Bajaj Electricals reported Q2 FY27 revenue of INR 1,123 crore, up 1.5% year over year, while EBIT margin expanded to 4.4% from 3.0% and profit after tax rose to INR 26 crore from INR 10 crore. Consumer Products revenue grew 2.4%, but Lighting Solutions revenue fell 1.3% and its EBIT margin compressed to 3.1% from 7.9%; first-half operating cash flow was negative INR 50 crore, largely due to inventory investment. The company launched 282 new SKUs, including solar products, and reported INR 845 crore in cash, cash equivalents and surplus investments; its stock was up 3.85% from the previous close.
Analysis
The earnings improvement is more credible at EBIT than at the bottom line, but its durability is not yet established. Consumer Products’ margin rebound is encouraging; however, the reported benefit from lower staff costs is described as phasing-related, while the higher brand spend is a management choice whose eventual sales payoff remains unproven. Treasury income also flatters PAT without improving the core franchise. The key test over the next 1–3 months is whether consumer-products growth and margin hold without further reliance on timing effects.
Competitive upside is concentrated in premium appliances and BLDC fans, where sustained traction could help Bajaj Electricals compete more effectively with Havells, Crompton Greaves Consumer Electricals, Orient Electric and V-Guard. But high-double-digit e-commerce growth may carry less attractive economics if it reflects discounting or channel migration rather than incremental demand. Solar is an option, not yet an earnings thesis: 239 launches show breadth, not sell-through, and expansion brings inventory, service and channel-execution demands against established providers such as Luminous Power Technologies and Microtek.
The main near-term risk is cash conversion: seasonal inventory absorbed operating cash, while vendor-financing interest is a reminder that working capital has a cost. Verify the composition of the stated INR 845 crore liquidity against the much smaller closing cash-and-bank balance before treating it as fully deployable. Over 6–18 months, the thesis improves if new categories scale and professional-lighting project flows normalize; it breaks if revenue remains subdued, Lighting margins fail to recover, or inventory and financing costs stay elevated. After one quarter, the stock reaction may over-credit earnings quality; valuation and consensus data are insufficient to establish a mispricing.

Key Decisions for Investors
- Do not chase the post-results move on this quarter alone. Keep Bajaj Electricals on a watchlist until the next results show repeatable Consumer Products margin improvement and better revenue momentum.
- Set a 1–3 month confirmation alert: reassess positively if Consumer Products growth persists and operating cash conversion improves as seasonal inventory unwinds; reassess negatively if inventory remains elevated or vendor-financing costs rise.
- Treat solar launches as an option, not a basis for forecasting earnings. Seek evidence of orders, sell-through, channel reach and service capability before assigning material value to the expansion.
- No outright long/short recommendation: valuation, consensus expectations, segment cash flows and the liquidity reconciliation are missing. A relative-value comparison with Havells, Crompton Greaves Consumer Electricals, Orient Electric and V-Guard is more appropriate once those inputs are available.
