Asbury Automotive reported Q3 2026 revenue of $4.4 billion, down 8% year over year, adjusted net income of $111 million, down 21%, and adjusted EPS of $6.16; management said a $0.69-per-share noncash Total Care Auto deferral reduced EPS, which would have been $6.85 without that impact. EV sales fell 76% year over year, while adjusted EBITDA declined 16.5% to $218 million. Asbury completed its Tekion rollout across active dealerships and expects adjusted SG&A to reach the low-60% range by the end of 2027; it is targeting leverage below 3x by mid-2027 from 3.5x at quarter end. The FTC administrative proceeding against the company was dismissed in early October, management said.

Analysis

ABG: execution is the catalyst, not the quarter. The market may be treating Tekion productivity as a fairly direct path to lower costs, but the early evidence comes from a limited, more-seasoned group of stores. Management also expects roughly half of the SG&A ratio improvement to come from gross-profit growth—not pure expense removal—so weaker vehicle or fixed-ops demand could delay the target even if the system works. The decisive test is whether newly converted stores improve after the stated adoption period without sacrificing service margins or customer retention.

There is a potential mix trap in used-car growth: sourcing more auction vehicles can add volume and recon work, but management says those units generate materially less vehicle PVR than trade-ins. Volume growth could therefore support fixed-ops absorption while diluting front-end economics and raising inventory-financing needs. Meanwhile, TCA’s deferral headwind obscures current earnings quality; its eventual accounting normalization should not be mistaken for improved underlying economics absent evidence of sustained product-level income and cash generation.

Near term, leverage and ongoing TCA deferrals constrain capital returns, limiting the force of management’s undervaluation argument. Over 1–3 months, watch Q4 service gross profit, used PVR alongside units, and leverage progression. Over 6–18 months, the thesis depends on seasoned Tekion stores’ gains spreading across the network. A consumer slowdown, persistent parts-and-service weakness, or less favorable used sourcing could reverse the operational improvement. The FTC dismissal removes a company-specific uncertainty, but does not itself establish a durable earnings uplift.

Key Decisions for Investors

  • Stay neutral on ABG rather than buying the projected efficiency story immediately. Reassess after Q4 and the first half of 2027; require improving same-store fixed-ops gross profit and SG&A leverage as converted stores season before adding.
  • For an existing ABG position, treat management’s low-60s SG&A-to-gross-profit objective as conditional, not a base-case earnings bridge. Falsify the improvement thesis if the ratio fails to trend down as stores pass the adoption period or if service gross profit remains weak.
  • Track used retail units and PVR together, plus auction-sourced share and floorplan costs. If volume rises while PVR erodes and inventory financing expands, the growth mix is not translating into attractive incremental economics.
  • Keep buyback expectations secondary to deleveraging: monitor progress toward the below-3x target and TCA’s reported pretax income versus noncash deferrals. A slower leverage reduction or persistent deferrals would weaken the prospective capital-return case.
