Why Black Hills Stock Rocketed Higher Today

Black Hills signed a long-term agreement to serve Google's planned Cheyenne data center, expected to start operating in late 2027 and reach peak capacity in 2030. The utility will provide up to 590 MW of grid-connected energy, manage 2.1 GW of third-party-contracted service, and invest $1.8 billion in gas generation infrastructure; it projects about $150 million of net income in 2030 and $2.4 billion of unlevered free cash flow through 2048, net of that investment. Shares rose 7.2% on Wednesday, and Freedom Brokers upgraded the stock to Buy from Hold and raised its price target to $78 from $69.

Analysis

BKH’s re-rating is plausible, but the headline economics are long-dated: 2030 earnings depend on a multiyear build, while cumulative unlevered free cash flow through 2048 is not equivalent to present value. The key diligence item is the contract, not the customer’s credit: verify minimum-payment and termination provisions, cost-overrun and delay allocation, fuel-price pass-through, and whether the 2.1-GW managed third-party supply carries meaningful margin or primarily operating responsibility. The “no cost shift” claim should also be tested against regulatory approvals and the final ownership of generation assets.

The second-order upside extends to gas-generation equipment and construction suppliers if projects move from announcement to firm orders, but no supplier award is identified yet. For GOOGL, securing power may reduce a constraint on data-center deployment; the counterweight is greater long-term energy procurement and infrastructure complexity, with no basis here to infer a material change to consolidated earnings.

Near term, BKH’s sharp move may have capitalized part of the de-risking before execution evidence arrives. Over 1–3 months, contract disclosure, permits, financing and equipment orders matter more than the analyst target. Over 6–18 months, schedule slippage, construction inflation, or weaker protections could reopen customer-concentration and balance-sheet concerns. The contrarian risk is treating projected 2048 cash flows as assured value today; the bullish case strengthens only if protections and returns survive scrutiny.

Key Decisions for Investors

  • Do not chase the post-announcement gap in BKH. Consider a staged long only on consolidation or a pullback, contingent on reviewing the signed contract and confirming that customer payments cover committed capital and operating costs.
  • Track BKH’s project capex, funding plan, regulatory approvals, and construction milestones over the next 1–3 months. Falsify the thesis if protections prove conditional, required investment rises materially, or the facility schedule slips without compensation.
  • Treat GOOGL as a watch item rather than a direct trade: the power arrangement supports capacity delivery but does not establish a material earnings catalyst. Reassess if the project’s power costs or data-center timing change company guidance.
  • Monitor gas-turbine and engineering procurement awards for potential downstream beneficiaries; avoid supplier exposure until named orders, pricing, and delivery schedules are disclosed.
