UBS initiates TechnipFMC stock with buy rating on subsea growth
Source: Investing.com

UBS initiated coverage of TechnipFMC with a buy rating and an $89 price target, versus a $69.75 share price, citing offshore growth and conversion of higher-margin Subsea 2.0 backlog; it forecasts more than $11B in Subsea orders for FY2027 and FY2028 EBITDA of $2.77B, 5% above consensus. TechnipFMC’s Q2 2026 adjusted EPS of $0.91 and revenue of $2.76B beat estimates of $0.80 and $2.67B, respectively, and the company raised its full-year profit outlook. Shares nevertheless fell in premarket trading after the earnings report and were up 56.9% year to date.
Analysis
The key underwriting question is whether FTI can turn its installed-base position and backlog into repeatable, higher-margin cash generation—not whether another analyst sees upside. If Subsea 2.0 conversion and integrated project delivery improve execution and customer retention, FTI could gain share while making project awards harder for competitors such as Subsea 7 and Saipem to displace. The counter-effect is concentration of execution risk: schedule slippage, cost overruns, or constrained supplier capacity could delay revenue and erode the margin benefit before the backlog converts.
UBS’s FY2028 EBITDA view is a material step above the range it says the market implies, but it is a bank forecast, not independently established earnings power. Its 12x forward EV/EBITDA target also leaves the equity exposed to multiple compression if offshore enthusiasm fades. After a substantial year-to-date rerating, the risk/reward looks more attractive on a pullback or after evidence of order quality and cash conversion than as a momentum chase.
Over the next 1–3 months, track subsea order intake, backlog conversion, project margins and cash flow at the next company update. Over 6–18 months, sustained offshore investment and industrialized delivery could support share gains; weaker commodity prices or customer capex deferrals could reverse the cycle. Falsifiers: orders fall short of the company’s trajectory, guidance or project margins weaken, or backlog growth fails to translate into cash generation.

Key Decisions for Investors
- Do not chase FTI solely on the new target. Consider staged exposure on weakness, contingent on order intake and backlog conversion supporting the long-dated earnings case.
- Treat UBS’s FY2028 EBITDA estimate and valuation multiple as scenario inputs, not a base case. Reassess after the next results/update using order growth, project margins and free-cash-flow conversion.
- Watch for relative share gains against Subsea 7 and Saipem as a read-through on integrated subsea execution; avoid a pair trade until comparable order and valuation data confirm the direction.
- Reduce or defer exposure if offshore awards soften, project execution costs rise, or guidance is cut; these would challenge both the earnings premium and the forward multiple.
