V2 Retail Q2 FY27 slides show 28% revenue growth amid market concerns
Source: Investing.com

V2 Retail reported Q2 FY27 revenue of ₹905.6 crore, up 28% year over year, and EBITDA of ₹120.3 crore, up 41%, but PAT rose only 6% to ₹18.2 crore as depreciation nearly doubled to ₹68.3 crore. Same-store sales fell 14.9% (0.5% on management’s normalized basis), borrowings increased to ₹528.9 crore from ₹253.9 crore at FY26-end, and H1 operating cash flow declined to ₹18.0 crore from ₹109.8 crore a year earlier. Management retained its 50% full-year revenue growth target and expects roughly 60% sales growth in H2, while planning 60–70 store openings in H2; shares fell 4.95% to $156.47 after the presentation.
Analysis
The key issue is whether new stores are creating attractive returns, not whether the chain can add locations. With normalized Q2 same-store sales near flat, falling network sales density and weak operating cash flow, much of the growth is currently being purchased with leases, inventory and borrowing. That raises the hurdle for expansion: store cohorts must mature fast enough to cover occupancy, depreciation and financing costs. Reported Ind AS EBITDA also overstates comparability with cash economics; track pre-Ind AS EBITDA alongside rent-adjusted store returns and cash conversion.
Q3 is the near-term catalyst, but its festival and wedding-season concentration may shift demand between quarters rather than establish a durable recovery. A strong headline quarter would be less persuasive than positive mature-store sales, improving sales per square foot and working-capital normalization together. If those fail, slower FY28 openings could protect the balance sheet but also expose how little growth is coming from existing stores. V-Mart Retail and Trent’s value-fashion offering are relevant competitive checks: any execution pause could leave share available to better-capitalized organized retailers, though their market positioning is not identical.
The contrarian point is that the market may be treating expansion-related depreciation as temporary while underweighting the associated lease and inventory capital. Conversely, the sharp share-price drawdown may already discount near-term execution risk; without valuation and liquidity data, neither a fresh outright short nor a valuation-based long is compelling. Reassess after Q3 and the March working-capital update.

Key Decisions for Investors
- Avoid chasing the post-results move; keep V2 Retail on a conditional underweight/watch list rather than initiating a large directional position without valuation and liquidity checks.
- Consider a small, defined-risk long only if Q3 shows positive mature-store sales alongside better sales density and cash conversion—not merely seasonal revenue growth. Revisit or exit the thesis if mature-store sales remain weak or borrowing continues rising.
- Track net working-capital days, inventory aging/markdowns, borrowings and operating cash flow through the March update. Failure to move toward management’s stated working-capital range would weaken the self-funded-growth case.
- Use V-Mart Retail and Trent as competitive monitors, not automatic pair hedges: compare store productivity and growth quality before expressing a relative-value position.
