‘We didn’t see this coming’: Wall Street eats its forecasts as stocks sell off globally on fear of AI bubble ahead of SpaceX IPO

The market setup is less about one macro datapoint and more about forced de-risking across crowded growth exposures. When rates, inflation, and growth all wobble together, the first-order loser is expensive duration assets, but the second-order loser is the funding ecosystem around them: VC, late-stage private comps, and any public name implicitly priced off a 2025/26 TAM rather than current cash flow. That makes AI-adjacent leaders vulnerable not just to multiple compression, but to a tightening of capital formation that can slow competitive intensity over the next 6-12 months.

Banks are in a tricky middle ground. A higher-inflation/softening-growth regime can lift nominal rates, but if unemployment starts catching up, the market will quickly reprice credit losses and deposit betas before NII benefits show through. BAC is more exposed to this sequencing than GS: the former is a macro beta proxy with retail deposit sensitivity, while the latter can benefit from volatility and event activity if the tape stays disorderly, but faces lower balance-sheet leverage to the theme and less direct earnings convexity.

The more interesting read is that the AI trade may be transitioning from scarcity premium to execution premium. If public markets start demanding near-term monetization, the winners shift from frontier narrative names to the infrastructure providers with contracted demand, pricing power, and capex visibility. That is usually a 1-2 quarter rotation, not a one-day event, and it often produces sharp relative underperformance in the most crowded beneficiaries before the broader index fully de-risks.

The contrarian risk is that the selloff becomes self-limiting if positioning is already too defensive. A fast dovish pivot, better inflation prints, or strong IPO demand could trigger a violent squeeze in the most shorted growth names and cyclical financials. In that case, the current risk-off tape may be more of a positioning flush than the start of a sustained regime change, especially over the next 2-6 weeks.
