Earnings call transcript: Monadelphous H2 2026 profit jumps, shares sink 13%

Monadelphous reported record FY26 results: revenue rose 31.5% to AUD 2.98B and net profit after tax increased 52% to AUD 127.3M, with EBITDA up 43% to AUD 226M. Despite the strong numbers, the stock fell 13.01% to $28.16 after management guided for FY27 revenue to be “flat to modestly higher,” implying a consolidation phase. The company also lifted its full-year dividend 50% to AUD 1.08/share (final AUD 0.59), while reiterating EBITDA margins would be held around current levels and capex averages ~2% of revenue.

Analysis

The market is punishing MOPHY for signaling cyclical normalization after a period of outsized operating leverage, not for any sign of balance-sheet stress. That matters because the next 12 months are likely to be a mix story rather than a demand-collapse story: less emergency turnaround work and fewer one-off brownfield packages can slow reported growth even while pricing discipline and margin quality hold up. In other words, the first derivative is lower revenue growth; the second derivative may still be healthy cash generation.

The key second-order winner is the customer base, especially RIO, SHEL and WDS, because a disciplined contractor with broader integrated capability should reduce execution risk on complex work and improve schedule certainty. The subtle loser is the long tail of smaller subcontractors and single-trade competitors that depend on spillover work when MOPHY is capacity constrained; if management stays selective, that work is more likely to be rationed rather than chased. The recent acquisitions also increase MOPHY’s attach rate to transmission and energy-transition spend, which is more relevant to FY28 than FY27.

The stock can stay weak for 1-3 months until the market sees evidence that revenue is merely flattening, not rolling over. The main falsifier is a real margin break: if FY27 EBITDA margin slips materially below the high-7% range or maintenance revenue falls more than a mid-single-digit amount, the current selloff is justified. Conversely, if the new-contract pipeline converts and margins hold, the market is probably overpricing one year of consolidation as the end of the cycle.
