Australia's earnings season winners emerge

Australia’s peak earnings season is favoring commodity-linked names like BHP and Woodside, as elevated commodity prices offset underlying headwinds. Bloomberg Intelligence also flags Australian banks as positioned for significant margin expansion and a structural return on equity uplift in fiscal 2027. Net impact is supportive for sector performance, but the article is more outlook- than figure-driven.

Analysis

The cleanest read is that Australia is in a late-cycle bifurcation: resource names still have visible earnings torque from spot commodity strength, while the domestic bank complex is looking through a lagged profit cycle into a better funding/margin setup. For BHP and Woodside, the key second-order effect is not just higher cash flow, but a flatter earnings distribution versus global peers because Australian cost inflation has already reset; that tends to support buybacks/dividends and can keep valuation floors intact even if commodity beta cools. The risk is that the market starts to price these as durable rather than cyclical, which is usually when upside becomes more limited.

For the banks, the market may be underappreciating how long it takes margin expansion to show up in reported ROE: deposit repricing, mortgage competition, and hedging roll-off create a delayed benefit that can extend into FY2027. That favors the large deposit-rich franchises over second-tier lenders and mortgage brokers, while higher bank profitability can be a headwind for housing affordability, loan growth, and credit-sensitive sectors such as residential REITs and consumer discretionary. The main reversal trigger is a faster-than-expected easing cycle or a sharp rise in credit losses that forces banks to sacrifice margin for volume.

Contrarian view: this setup may be more about earnings resilience than a new bull leg. If China growth data weakens or the AUD strengthens, miners lose operating leverage quickly; if the RBA cuts sooner, the bank margin story gets pulled forward but the earnings bridge may actually compress. The best trade expression is relative value, not outright beta chasing.
