Chunghwa Telecom reported Q3 2026 revenue of TWD 67.59 billion, up 16.7% year over year, and net income of TWD 10.34 billion, up 29.5%; revenue, operating income, net income, EBITDA and EPS exceeded the upper end of guidance and reached third-quarter highs since 2009. EPS was TWD 1.57, while nine-month free cash flow rose 19.6% to TWD 33.67 billion. Management said it expects to exceed full-year guidance, citing telecom and ICT growth, but noted a one-time subsidiary asset-revitalization gain is not expected to recur at a similar size in the near term; strong ICT project growth also slightly weighed on Enterprise segment pre-tax profit because such projects carry lower margins.

Analysis

The earnings quality is mixed: durable telecom pricing and retention are improving, but the step-up in consolidated growth overstates the recurring run-rate. The asset-revitalization gain is explicitly not expected to recur near term; handset/product sales and project-heavy ICT also add volatility. Most importantly, order intake is not recognized revenue, and management says one-time ICT projects still exceed recurring ICT revenue. Their lower-margin equipment and construction mix can dilute enterprise profit even while revenue accelerates. Watch conversion of backlog into recurring IDC, cybersecurity and cloud services—not headline ICT growth.

CHT’s advantage is the ability to bundle connectivity, local data-center capacity and security for regulated customers. That could help it win Taiwan financial and public-sector AI workloads, but competitors can contest projects on price, while the Google collaboration has no disclosed economics and should not be capitalized as material earnings yet. Alphabet is therefore not a direct earnings read-through from this call.

Near term, guidance outperformance may support sentiment, but a one-off gain limits the signal for forward EPS. Over 1–3 months, order conversion, enterprise margins and any formal guidance revision are the key catalysts. Over 6–18 months, AIDC occupancy and recurring service attach rates could improve mix; conversely, delayed utilization or renewed network investment could absorb cash. FCF is strong, but lower capex partly reflects investment timing, not necessarily a structurally lower spend requirement. The contrarian point: the market may over-credit backlog and AI branding while underweighting project margins and lumpy recognition. Without valuation and dividend-yield context, this supports a measured, income-oriented long bias rather than an aggressive growth multiple thesis.

Key Decisions for Investors

  • CHT: Favor a measured long on weakness, not a post-earnings chase. The thesis is stable telecom cash generation plus optionality from recurring ICT; size the position assuming project revenue and asset gains are not a sustainable growth rate.
  • Over the next 1–3 months, monitor reported ICT recurring-revenue mix, Enterprise Business pre-tax profit, contract-liability conversion and formal full-year guidance. Treat rising orders without better margin or conversion as a warning, not a buy signal.
  • Reassess the long thesis if enterprise profit continues to fall despite ICT growth, AIDC customer utilization disappoints, or management indicates materially higher capex without corresponding recurring revenue. Stronger recurring mix and improving enterprise margins would validate it.
  • Do not trade GOOG on the collaboration announcement alone: no revenue share, customer volume or financial contribution was disclosed. Revisit only if Alphabet reports a measurable commercial contribution or CHT quantifies material AI-related demand.
