Citi spots AI upside in two software stocks despite earnings and execution risks
Source: Investing.com

Citi sees upside in both software companies, preferring Appian for accelerating cloud growth and stronger execution, while maintaining Buy ratings on Appian with a $40 target and Pegasystems with a reduced $52 target. Pegasystems’ ACV growth slowed to 8% year over year in Q2 from 11% in Q1, and its full-year growth target fell to about 10% from 15%; Citi sees potential in its AI-powered Blueprint tool. Appian’s Q2 cloud revenue grew 22% and near-term remaining performance obligations rose 23%; Citi cited $60 million in third-quarter federal awards, up from $49 million a year earlier.
Analysis
The investable question is whether AI-driven workflow efficiency becomes a paid product advantage or merely lowers implementation effort and weakens pricing. A faster prototype is not proof of production deployment: security, integration, governance and change management remain bottlenecks. Microsoft, Salesforce and ServiceNow can bundle adjacent workflow capabilities, limiting standalone vendors’ ability to capture the savings as price increases. Conversely, if customers deploy faster and expand usage, shorter implementation cycles could improve retention and sales efficiency over 6–18 months.
Near term, treat the two names differently. APPN’s already strong post-results performance raises the bar: cloud growth and backlog conversion matter more than AI demonstrations, while partner-award totals should not be treated as booked company revenue. PEGA has more event risk; the central signal is whether ACV weakness reverses through deal conversion or persists after sales-process changes. Citi’s product testing is a hypothesis, not independent evidence of monetization. The cited earnings dates create a short, sequential catalyst window, but there is insufficient valuation and options data to justify a blind event bet.

Key Decisions for Investors
- Do not chase APPN into the cited earnings release. Hold or initiate only on confirmation that cloud growth remains above 20% and near-term obligations convert; trim if growth decelerates or sales-and-marketing expense rises without corresponding demand evidence.
- For PEGA, stay tactically sidelined ahead of results; consider a modest long only if ACV growth stabilizes or improves and management demonstrates delayed deals converting. If ACV remains weak and the pipeline outlook deteriorates, avoid the value/AI thesis rather than averaging down.
- Watch AI monetization, not demo speed: seek evidence of paid product adoption, customer expansions and implementation-time reductions in reported results or customer disclosures. Failure to show commercial conversion over the next 1–3 quarters would weaken the structural thesis and increase pricing-pressure risk.
- No direct trade in C is supported by this analyst view; Citi’s research call does not establish a material earnings catalyst for Citigroup.
